So how is that right balance found and established? How can we acquire the wisdom to know what to do and what not to do in any given situation? It clearly cannot be approached in a linear way. It is far more like a geodesic—a curved line or more accurately a special collection of geodesics whose origin and destination ultimately return to its source, a source that defines an innermost emptiness and silence at the center of a vibrant hollow sphere, a warp bubble composed of a diaphanous, porous membrane just begging to be distorted.

In simple terms, it’s like being in the eye of a powerful, swirling hurricane; you need the guts to let go and allow yourself to float in this maelstrom of Massive Complexity and in so doing, to view it from deep within, to come to know it, and with that deep intuitive knowing to develop mastery of your unique place in it for the first time. Note that mastery of Massive Complexity is itself a paradox; in reality, we can only master our own microenvironment within Massive Complexity, yet properly harmonized with others doing likewise in a highly collaborative environment, Massive Complexity becomes mastered. We don’t beg flowers to blossom; in their natural environment, they spontaneously do so.

When encountering Massive Complexity, we don’t try to figure it out nor fit into it. At least not right away. Instead we take notes, ask questions, and actively observe. We allow ourselves to glide from one aspect to another, taking indirect paths that don’t always end up making sense. This may seem illogical, and our minds may want to immediately get to the heart of the problem—and in so doing, often create problems where they didn’t even exist. We must allow ourselves to think in abstract ways that are far more like floating or gently swimming than racing to a finish line. All of this nonlinear thinking and collectively following different paths in a collaborative environment helps us arrive at a strangely familiar destination. And it all contributes to putting the Complex Organism on the path to Mastery—a path that involves each and every one of us in diverse areas and domains.

I have always loved learning and reading, but reading wasn’t always easy for me. Particularly from the eighth grade on reading was actually stressful because I couldn’t just read something and move on. I had to study each word and each sentence. For example, I might read a paragraph over and over again until I was fully convinced that I understood every aspect of that paragraph. I might spend an hour on a single page of a book that by all rights I should have blitzed through in twenty or thirty seconds. I just couldn’t help it.

The irony though is that I could use this quirk to study books on advanced physics, mathematics, or abstract software concepts and actually understand the material, whereas someone who read it more quickly would not. Ironically, I didn’t have to spend an hour on each page when reading technical books.
